Book of Sages

EPISODE 1

scroll1.    Those who horde wealth, though alive, are dead to realities of life.  Those who gain knowledge will remain alive through their knowledge even after their death.  Their faces may disappear from the community of living beings yet their ideas, the knowledge which they had left behind and their memory will remain in the minds of people.
2.    If you want to remove evil from the minds of others then first give up evil intentions yourself.
3.    When you feel afraid to do a thing then do it, because the real harm you may receive is less poignant than its expectation and fear.
4.    The knowledge which only remains on your tongue is superficial.  The true value of knowledge is that you act upon it.
5.    An ignorant person will always overdo a thing or totally neglect it.
6.    One who imagines himself to be all-knowing will surely suffer on account of his ignorance.
7.    Unfortunate is the one who cannot gain a few sincere friends during his life, and more unfortunate is the one who has gained them and then lost them through his deeds.
8.    A virtuous person is better then virtue and a vicious person is worse than vice.
9.    A man can be valued through his sayings.  The wiser he is the less talkative will he be.
10.    To keep silent when you can say something wise is as bad as propagating foolish and unwise thoughts.
11.    One who does not realize his own value is condemned to utter failure.
12.    Loving one another is half of wisdom.  Grief is half of old age.
13.    Like your body your mind also gets tired so refresh it by wise sayings.
14.    One who says unpleasant things about others will quickly become a target of their scandal.
15.    Live among people in such a manner that if you die they weep over you and if you are alive they crave for your company.
16.    A friend cannot be considered a friend unless he is tested on three occasions: in time of need, behind your back and after your death.
17.    Do not make friends with a fool because when he tries to do you good he will do you harm.  Do not make a miser your friend because he will run away from you at the time of your dire need.  Do not be friends with a wicked person because he will sell you and your friendship at the cheapest price.  And do not be friends with a liar because, like a mirage, he will make you see near the things which are far and will make you see far the things which are near.
18.    Failures are often the results of timidity and fears.  Disappointments are the results of bashfulness.  Hours of leisure pass away like summer-clouds, so do not waste the opportunity of doing good.
19.    People in this world are like travelers whose journey is going on though they are asleep.
20.    I wonder at the arrogance of a vain person.  Yesterday he was only a drop and tomorrow he will turn into a corpse.  I wonder at the man who sees people dying around him and yet he has forgotten his end.
21.    If you do not know something, never feel ashamed to admit ignorance. If you do not know something, never feel ashamed to learn it.
22.    The tongue is a beast, if it is let loose and not controlled it devours.
23.    The best deed of a man is to forgive and forget.
24.    Knowledge is power and can command obedience.  During his lifetime, a man of knowledge can make people obey and follow him, and he is praised and venerated after his death. Remember that knowledge is a ruler and wealth is its subject.

EPISODE 2

scroll1.    Take advantage of five things before five other things: Your youth before your old age, Your health before your sickness, Your wealth before your poverty, Your free time before your occupation, And your life before your death.
2.    The best of both worlds is gained through the intellect, There is no poverty like ignorance, So teach others your knowledge and learn their knowledge, Then you will bring your knowledge to perfection, And you will learn that which you did not know.
3.    If a person has a good opinion about you, then make his opinion true.
4.    Remember that pleasures pass but their results remain.
5.    There is nothing between truth and falsehood except four fingers, That is the distance between the eye and the ear, It is usually falsehood when you say, “I have heard,” While it is usually truth when you say, “I have seen.”
6.    Whenever life becomes hard you should inform your brothers, Do not rely only on yourself since you will be overpowered.
7.    If a person knows his brother to be steadfast in faith and righteous in action, he should not lend ear to what people say about him. Sometimes the archer shoots but the arrow goes astray. Similarly a word can be off the mark.
8.    A righteous man of authority is like a rider on a lion, Others are jealous of him but he truly understands his position.
9.    One who has a bad temper tortures himself.
10.    Feeling regretful about forgiving is better than feeling regretful about punishing.
11.    Avoid that for which you must apologize, For the righteous does not sin so that he should have to apologize, But the hypocrite sins every day and apologizes often.
12.    Do not wonder at the small number of those who follow the right, Because people gather around the table whose edibles are few While their hunger is insatiable.
13.    People will live in prosperity as long as they assist each other in enjoining the right and forbidding the evil.
14.    A man’s vanity towards himself is one of the enemies of his intelligence.
15.    When death comes to a seeker of knowledge, And he dies while he is in that state, Then he dies as a martyr.
16.    When you decide to do something, think of the result. If the result is good then proceed to perform it, Otherwise forget about it.
17.    Greed is lasting slavery.  It takes a person to the watering place but returns him without letting him drink.
